What happened
Health Canada authorised Sevmia, a once-weekly semaglutide injection submitted as a Wegovy generic for chronic weight management in patients aged 12 and over within the Canadian indication.
What we know
The regulator says it reviewed the evidence required of generic medicines for quality, safety and effectiveness. It also reported that other semaglutide submissions were under review.
What it does not mean
The authorisation does not determine price, coverage or provincial launch timing. It does not extend to the United States, Europe, Australia or the UK.
Why it matters
Generic entry may affect access and competition, but that requires observing actual supply and reimbursement. Prescription and monitoring requirements remain.
