What happened
Nature Medicine published ACCESS, a randomised placebo-controlled phase 2b trial of oral aleniglipron in 230 adults with obesity or overweight.
What we know
The study tested three doses for 36 weeks and met its primary weight-change endpoint against placebo. It also reports tolerability and an ongoing open-label extension.
Limitations
This is a mid-stage trial, not an authorisation or a direct comparison with marketed treatments. Sample size, duration and the later open-label phase limit conclusions about long-term use.
Why it matters
The paper adds evidence on oral small-molecule GLP-1 agonists, a different approach from current peptide medicines. Its future depends on later trials and regulatory review.
